Wallace's Woolly DaisyEriophyllum wallaceiHeight: Typically 2 to 8 inches tall Habitat: Dry, sandy or rocky desert soils Elevation: Found below 5,000 feet Range: Native to the southwestern United States, especially the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts—California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah Description: Wallace's Woolly Daisy is a tiny, woolly plant that forms low, rounded tufts. Its stems and leaves are covered in fine white hairs, giving it a silvery-gray look. In spring, it blooms with small yellow daisy-like flowers that brighten up desert landscapes. Uses: Primarily ecological—this daisy provides an early-season nectar source for native bees and insects. It’s not known for traditional medicinal or food use, but its charming appearance and hardiness make it a favorite among wildflower enthusiasts. Note: This little plant may be small, but it holds its own out in the harsh desert. Its woolly coating helps it survive sun and drought, and it adds a soft splash of color to the spring desert bloom. |
