Wildflowers:
Photo Guide -
List
Yellow > Desert Rock-pea Lotus rigidus Desert Rock-pea is a small but tough wildflower native to the deserts of the American Southwest. It belongs to the pea family and produces delicate-looking yellow flowers that brighten up rocky and sandy landscapes in early spring. Appearance: This short-lived perennial or annual usually grows 4 to 12 inches tall. It has slender, upright stems and small, narrow leaves. The bright yellow, pea-like flowers appear in small clusters and are followed by slender seed pods. Despite its delicate flowers, the plant has a stiff, almost wiry structure—reflected in the name rigidus. Habitat: Found in rocky or gravelly soils, desert flats, and dry slopes. Common in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts, often growing among creosote bush and other scrub. Bloom Time: Blooms from March to May, depending on rainfall. Pollinators: Attracts native bees and other small pollinators. Its flowers provide nectar and pollen during the spring bloom period. Note: Desert Rock-pea is easy to overlook until it blooms. Once it does, its golden flowers stand out against the muted desert backdrop—offering a brief but beautiful show of life in a rugged place. |
