Desert Alyssum, Bush PeppergrassLepedium fremontiiDesert Alyssum, or Bush Peppergrass, is a modest-looking but widespread desert shrub with a long bloom season and a sharp, peppery scent. Though not flashy, it plays a valuable role in desert ecosystems and was once used traditionally for its spicy qualities. Appearance: A rounded, woody shrub that typically grows 1 to 3 feet tall. It has small, narrow leaves and produces clusters of tiny white to greenish-white flowers that give the plant a frosty appearance when in full bloom. The flowers are followed by small seed pods, often flattened and heart-shaped. Habitat: Found in desert flats, rocky slopes, and washes—especially in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. Prefers dry, well-drained soils and full sun. Bloom Time: Blooms from February to May, and may bloom again in fall with late rains. Pollinators: Attracts small bees and flies. The abundant flowers provide early nectar and pollen in desert environments. Note: The plant gives off a sharp, mustard-like or peppery smell when crushed—hence the name "peppergrass." Though not showy, it’s a reliable, drought-tolerant shrub that adds texture and function to the desert landscape. |
