Plants: Mojave Desert ShrubsThe desert shrubs are low and woody, and they hold the Mojave together. Creosote bush, white bursage, blackbrush, saltbush, rabbitbrush, Mormon tea, and mesquite stand apart from one another across the open ground, each taking what the land will give.Where the desert lies low and hot, creosote and bursage spread over the flats. Higher up, where winter holds a little longer, blackbrush gathers in dark, close stands. Saltbush lives where the ground is bitter with alkali. Mesquite keeps to the washes and springs, where its roots can find water buried far below the dust. These plants have made their bargains with drought. Some wear small leaves slick with resin. Some give up their leaves when the dry time comes. Some send roots wide to catch a short rain before it is gone, and some drive down after hidden moisture.
