Wildflower List:
Desert LupineLupinus Shockleyi![]() Desert Lupine is a beautiful spring wildflower that brings shades of blue and purple to the desert after winter rains. A member of the pea family, this lupine is well adapted to arid environments and often appears alongside other seasonal bloomers in desert flats and washes. Appearance: An annual wildflower that typically grows 6 to 24 inches tall. It has soft, divided leaves shaped like small fans or hands (palmate), and its flower spikes are covered in pea-shaped blooms ranging from lavender to deep purple, often with white or yellow markings. Habitat: Found in sandy or gravelly soils, desert flats, slopes, and washes. Common in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts and other arid regions of the Southwest. Bloom Time: Blooms from March to May, depending on rainfall and elevation. Pollinators: Attracts bees, especially native solitary bees, which are important pollinators in desert ecosystems. Also visited by butterflies. Note: Desert Lupine is a sign of a healthy bloom year. Its vibrant color and gentle form stand out against the stark desert backdrop, offering both beauty and ecological benefit. |
