Wildflower List:
California FagonbushFagonia laevis![]() California Fagonbush is a low, spreading desert plant known for its tough nature and delicate-looking purple flowers. It thrives in some of the hottest, driest parts of the desert and brings subtle beauty to rocky slopes and canyons. Appearance: A small, sprawling shrub that hugs the ground, typically growing just a few inches tall but spreading outward. It has tiny, dark green leaves arranged in threes, with slender stems that may be thorny. The flowers are star-shaped, bright pink to purple, and usually appear singly. Despite the heat, the plant stays green long into the dry season. Habitat: Common on rocky hillsides, desert washes, and canyon walls. Found throughout the Mojave, Sonoran, and Colorado Deserts, especially in southeastern California, Arizona, and Baja California. Bloom Time: Blooms from March to September, and often persists longer than many spring wildflowers. Pollinators: Attracts small bees and insects. Its long blooming period makes it a steady nectar source in tough conditions. Note: California Fagonbush is a great example of desert toughness. It survives extreme heat, poor soil, and long dry spells—yet manages to keep blooming. It’s a quiet but steady presence in the desert’s harshest corners. |
