ATSF Caboose

Santa Fe Caboose

Mohave Museum of History and Arts, Kingman, AZ

This bright red caboose once rolled along the rails of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, serving as a mobile office and living space for the train crew. Positioned at the end of a freight train, the caboose gave the conductor and brakemen a place to monitor the cars ahead, handle paperwork, and rest during long journeys across the Southwest.

Cabooses like this one were equipped with stoves for heat, bunks for sleeping, and a raised observation area called a cupola—offering a view over the train to spot shifting loads or signs of trouble.

Retired from active service as modern technology took over its role, this caboose now stands as a symbol of Kingman’s rich railroad history and the vital role the railroad played in shaping transportation across the Mojave Desert.
