Santa Fe CabooseMohave Museum of History and Arts, Kingman, AZThis bright red caboose once rolled along the rails of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, serving as a mobile office and living space for the train crew. Positioned at the end of a freight train, the caboose gave the conductor and brakemen a place to monitor the cars ahead, handle paperwork, and rest during long journeys across the Southwest. Cabooses like this one were equipped with stoves for heat, bunks for sleeping, and a raised observation area called a cupola—offering a view over the train to spot shifting loads or signs of trouble. Retired from active service as modern technology took over its role, this caboose now stands as a symbol of Kingman’s rich railroad history and the vital role the railroad played in shaping transportation across the Mojave Desert. |
