Desert CalicoLoeseliastrum matthewsii![]() Desert Calico is a small but beautifully patterned wildflower that adds a splash of color to the desert floor in spring. Its name comes from the way its petals are decorated—like printed calico fabric, each flower is a tiny work of art. Appearance: A low-growing annual, usually 2 to 6 inches tall. The flowers are small but striking—pale pink to lavender with deep red or maroon markings in the throat. The leaves are narrow and often bristly, forming a low clump at the base. Habitat: Grows in sandy or gravelly soils in desert flats, washes, and along roadsides. Common in the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. Bloom Time: Blooms from March to May, depending on rainfall. Pollinators: Attracts small bees and insects. Its patterned flowers act as nectar guides, helping pollinators find their way in. Note: Desert Calico is easy to overlook until you’re up close—then it becomes one of the most charming blooms in the desert. It’s a great example of how intricate and colorful desert wildflowers can be, even at a small scale. |
Found in creosote bush scrub, Joshua tree woodlands below 5000 ft. Blooms April to June. |
