Volcanic Bombs

Large, detached masses of lava that are violently ejected during a volcanic eruption. While airborne, these molten fragments cool and take on rounded, streamlined shapes—often resembling bombshells—before landing on the ground. Volcanic bombs can vary in size from a few inches to several feet across and may cause damage or injury upon impact. Their distinctive shapes result from spinning and cooling in midair.

They are a striking example of the explosive power of certain volcanic eruptions and are commonly found around cinder cones and other explosive volcanic features.
