MetamorphicMetamorphic – Metamorphic rocks are one of the three main types of rock. They form deep underground when other rocks (like igneous or sedimentary rocks) are changed by heat and pressure. This usually happens over a very long time. The rocks don’t melt, but the heat and pressure cause them to change—their minerals get rearranged, and they become harder and sometimes look different. For example, limestone can change into marble, and granite can become gneiss. Metamorphic rocks often have layers or stripes and are tougher than the rocks they came from.Upper Foothills Metamorphic BeltThis subsection is the intermediate elevations of the western slope of the Sierra Nevada where it is crossed by the Yuba, American, Cosumnes, Mokelumne, ...Mosaic Canyon - Death Valley GeologyThe relatively recent uplift of Death Valley's mountain ranges and subsequent erosion have exposed these metamorphic rocks. Here are some metamorphic rocks found in the Death Valley and Mojave Desert regions: Schist – A shiny, layered metamorphic rock that often contains mica. Found in several mountain ranges in the Mojave, including parts of the Funeral Mountains and Panamint Range. Gneiss – A banded rock that forms from granite under high pressure and heat. Common in the Black Mountains and Panamint Range near Death Valley. Marble – Formed from limestone, often white or light-colored. Found in the Kingston Range and parts of the Clark Mountains. Historic marble quarries existed in some Mojave locations. Quartzite – Formed from sandstone, very hard and often light-colored. Found in places like the New York Mountains and parts of the Providence Mountains. Amphibolite – A dark, dense rock formed mostly of amphibole minerals. Occurs in some highly metamorphosed areas, like near Tecopa and Dumont Dunes. |
