GULLYING - Erosional process forming a deep ditch or channel cut by running water after a prolonged downpour. Gullying is a natural process in which moving water cuts deep channels, known as gullies, into soil or loose dirt. This predominantly occurs in areas with little plant life, much rainfall, or poor land care. When the water starts to flow on the ground, it collects in little grooves, which gradually deepen and finally become big and deep gullies. Gullying can become a serious problem to farming and building because it takes away good soil and makes land unstable. The situation can also get aggravated over time due to the non-upkeep or repair of gullies, thereby making the land less usable. Most solutions involve planting again, creating terraces, or using some other kind of structures such as check dams to reduce flow velocities and erosion rates. Also see FLASH FLOOD |
