GRAVEL - Rounded sedimentary particles greater than 2 mm in diameter. Gravel is a collection of loose, small rock fragments that are naturally formed through weathering and erosion or artificially crushed. It typically consists of pieces ranging in size from about 2 millimeters (0.08 inches) to 64 millimeters (2.5 inches) in diameter. Gravel can be found in various settings, such as riverbeds, beaches, or quarries. There are two main types of gravel: Natural gravel: Formed by natural processes like the movement of water in rivers or glaciers, resulting in smooth, rounded pieces. Crushed gravel: Produced by mechanically breaking larger rocks into smaller pieces, often with angular edges. Gravel is widely used in construction for pathways, driveways, roadbeds, and as an aggregate in concrete and asphalt. It's also valued in landscaping for its aesthetic and drainage properties. |
