GRANIVORY - Refers to the loss of seeds due to consumption by another organism. Syn: predation Granivory refers to the feeding behavior of animals that primarily eat seeds. Animals that practice granivory are called granivores and can include certain birds (like sparrows and finches), rodents (like mice and squirrels), and insects (like some ants and beetles). Granivores play a key role in ecosystems by influencing plant populations and seed dispersal. While they consume seeds for their high nutrient content (rich in fats, proteins, and carbohydrates), some seeds survive the process, especially if they are hoarded or buried, leading to new plant growth. |
