GRAMINOIDS - Includes grasses, sedges (grass-like plants), and rushes (marsh plants). Graminoids are grass-like plants that belong to several families of monocotyledons, including: Grasses (Poaceae family) Sedges (Cyperaceae family) Rushes (Juncaceae family) These plants typically have slender, elongated leaves and grow in tufts or mats. They are common in a variety of ecosystems, such as wetlands, grasslands, and tundras. While graminoids may look similar, their differences lie in their botanical structures, like stems, leaves, and flowers: Grasses usually have hollow stems with joints (nodes). Sedges have solid, triangular stems. Rushes tend to have solid, round stems. Graminoids play an essential role in their habitats by providing food, stabilizing soil, and creating habitats for other species. |
