FOLSOM CULTURE - A population of people in existence during the late Paleo-Indian period. The Folsom culture, an interesting segment of early North American history, dates back about 12,500 to 10,000 years. It was actually named after a location in New Mexico and is quite well known for the excellent Folsom points, which were fluted stone tools to aid in bison hunting from way back in the Pleistocene. These nomadic folks followed the migrating herds all over the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains, showing how adaptable they were during the late Ice Age. The 1926 discovery of Folsom points with the now-extinct bison bones proved that people were in North America much earlier than previously thought. There is a testimony to how clever those early people were and how they could manage living with large environmental changes. |
