Cactus in the Mojave Desert

Pencil Cholla Cactus

Opuntia ramosissima

Approximately 5 foot high plant often resembles a shrub in bloom from a distance. Many compact branches with sheathed, 2-inch long spines. Some stems do not have do not have spines. Very small green, yellow or brown flowers bloom in late spring and summer.
