Wildflower List:
Desert DandelionMalacothrix glabrata![]() Desert Dandelion is a cheerful, yellow wildflower that covers the desert floor with color during good bloom years. Though it resembles the common dandelion, this plant is native to the American Southwest and perfectly adapted to arid conditions. Appearance: An annual wildflower that grows 6 to 20 inches tall. It has narrow, green leaves that form a low rosette at the base. The flowers are bright yellow, daisy-like, and held on long, leafless stems. A key feature is the often reddish or purplish center that can appear as the flower matures. Habitat: Common in sandy or gravelly soils across desert flats, washes, and open slopes. Found throughout the Mojave and Sonoran Deserts. Bloom Time: Blooms from February to May, depending on rainfall and elevation. Pollinators: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Its abundance makes it an important springtime nectar source for desert wildlife. Note: Desert Dandelion is one of the most widespread and recognizable wildflowers in a desert superbloom. It brings a burst of gold to the landscape and often grows alongside other spring bloomers like Desert Gold and Sand Verbena. |
