PHLOEM - Small tubes that carry food from where it is photosynthesized in the leaves to the roots and other places in a plant where it is used and stored. Phloem functions as the transportation system for nutrients within plants. Composed of small tubular structures, it facilitates the movement of sugars and essential nutrients synthesized during photosynthesis in the leaves to the roots and various other regions of the plant where these substances are either required or stored. One might conceptualize it as a botanical equivalent to a grocery delivery service. |
